The Chairman of the State Committee of Science of RA Prof. S. Haroutiunian, Dean of the Faculty of Biology of Yerevan State University, Prof. E. Gevorgyan, and Head of the Chair of Genetics and Cytology, Prof. R. Harutyunyan visited CANDLE. The status of the CANDLE project, the project first phase – Advanced Research Electron Accelerator Laboratory (AREAL) creation in CANDLE institute and the scientific outlooks of the new facility have been discussed, including organizational aspects of the establishment of Scientific Advisory Panel.

Memorandum of Understanding is signed between
Paul Scherrer Institut (Switzerland) and the State Committee of Science of RA regarding the CANDLE project
Armenian delegation headed by the Chairman of the State Committee of Science of RA Prof. Samvel Haroutiunian visited Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) regarding CANDLE synchrotron light facility project in Armenia. The program of the visit included acquaintance with SLS synchrotron light facility, Linear accelerator for SwissFEL project and other research facilities.
On the 25th of August the Armenian delegation have been received by PSI directorate. The collaboration between PSI and CANDLE, the science policy in Armenia and the scientific-technical and user community aspects of the proposed 3 GeV CANDLE project in Armenia and the first phase of the project implementation were discussed. Both sides agreed on the importance of the start up of the first phase of the project realization with the construction of a linear accelerator laboratory in CANDLE research institute. Both sides highly evaluated the benefits of proposed 3 GeV CANDLE light source for the international synchrotron light user community.
To further strengthen the collaboration activities, both sides agreed to promote:
- Exchange of expertise.
- Development of joint research programs.
- Training of young scientists and engineers.
- Organization of collaboration workshops.
The corresponding Memorandum of Understanding between Paul Scherrer Institut and State Committee of Science of RA has been signed.

Memorandum of Understanding is signed between
Deutches Elektronen Synchrotron – DESY and the State Committee of Science of RA regarding the CANDLE project.
15-17 August 2011, Armenian official delegation headed by the Chairman of the State Committee of Science of RA Prof. Samvel Haroutiunian visited the German accelerator center Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron – DESY (Hamburg) regarding CANDLE synchrotron light facility project in Armenia.
The program of the visit included acquaintance with DESY main research facilitates PETRA III synchrotron light source, European X-Ray Free Electron Laser and RAGAE laser driven linear accelerator laboratory.
On the 16th of August the Armenian delegation have been received by DESY directorate. The status of collaboration between German and Armenian scientists, the scientific-technical aspects of the new synchrotron project in Armenia, its highlights from the international user community point of view and the first phase of project implementation were discussed.
The meeting started with welcome presentation by Prof. Helmut Dosch, the Chairman of Board of Directors of DESY. After the introduction of the scientific policy of Armenia by Prof. Haroutiunian, the presentation on CANDLE new synchrotron light facility project in Armenia was given by Dr. Vasili Tsakanov, Director of the project.
In recognition of the long-term successful cooperation between German and Armenian scientists Memorandum of Understanding between DESY and State Committee of Science has been signed. Both sides highly evaluated:
- The collaboration established between German and Armenian scientists in the field of
basic and applied sciences and its highlights in long-term perspectives.

The decision to start up the first phase of the project implementation – AREAL –advanced
linear accelerator laboratory in CANDLE research institute and the MOU signed between CANDLE and DESY accelerator division.

The potential of collaboration on CANDLE project implementation and usage as an
international facility.
In order to strengthen the collaboration activity it was agreed to promote:

Exchange of expertise.

Development of joint research programs.
-
Training of young scientists and engineers.
-
Organization of collaboration workshops.
It was accepted that the successful development of the CANDLE project is in benefit of the entire scientific community and it is worth to be included in international cooperation programs in the field of science and technology.

CANDLE Project Coordination Council Meeting
The CANDLE project coordination council chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan had a meeting 22 June 2011 in the Office of Government.
The council acknowledged the progress on the CANDLE project and linear accelerator construction reported by the Chairman of the State Committee of Science of RA Samvel Haroutunyan and Director of CANDLE Institute Vasili Tsakanov. The 2011 action plan for the CANDLE project implementation was approved. In conclusion, the status of the CANDLE Institute was discussed.

Visit of Professor Carlo Rizzuto, President, Sincrotrone Trieste-ELETTRA, Italy.
A signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the representatives of the Republic of Armenia and Sincrotrone Trieste-ELETTRA,
Italy took place on May 11, 2011 regarding to CANDLE synchrotron light source project in Armenia.
Armenian side was represented by Professor Samvel Haroutiunian, Chairman of the State Committee of Science and Vassili Tsakanov,
CANDLE project Director.
The Italian side was represented by Professor Carlo Rizzuto, President, Sincrotrone Trieste-ELETTRA.
The parties met in the occasion of the visit by President of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Dr Renzo Tondo, to Armenia
and upon suggestion by Prime Minister of Armenia Mr. Tigran Sargsyan.
They discussed the scientific-technical aspects of the Candle synchrotron light source facility project creation developed
by the Armenian side and its international outlook for users, within the network of Synchrotrons coordinated in the European Research Area.
It was agreed that the Italian and Armenian scientists in the creation of the synchrotron light source center and its involvement
in the international science are mutually beneficial and will strengthen the relationship between the two countries, as well as with
the European Union.
The sides agreed that in order to implement the project, they will promote it at the intergovernmental level, and will mutually
collaborate by exchanging resources and expertise.

The official delegation of
CANDLE project visited Russian Research Center "Kurchatov Institute".
The official delegation of CANDLE project coordinating council headed by Samvel Haroutiunyan ,
the Chair of State Committee of Science of the Republic of Armenia,visited Russian Research
Center " Kurchatov Institute". The delegation became acquainted with the new advanced
research laboratories and visited the Kurchatov Center of Synchrotron Radiation and Nanotechnology.
The Armenian delegation had a meeting with the Kurchatov Institute Directorate where the CANDLE project was presented.

во главе с председателем государственного комитета науки Республики Армения, Самвелом Арутюняном.
Гости побывали на экскурсии в научно-исследовательских лабораториях Курчатовского НБИК-центра, осмотрели инженерный
комплекс Курчатовского центра синхротронного излучения и нанотехнологий. В рамках визита состоялась встреча с руководством
Центра, на которой армянская делегация представила техническую презентацию проекта CANDLE.
