  ARMENIAN PRESIDENT KOCHARIAN RECEIVES CANDLE PROJECT SCIENTISTS

YEREVAN, JUNE 4, ARMENPRESS: Armenian president Robert Kocharian receives today a team of Armenian scientists, who are involved in CANDLE (Center for the Advancement of Natural Discoveries using Light Emission) - a new synchrotron light source project in Armenia, to be based on a 3 GeV synchrotron light source that will provide a unique opportunity for the scientific research using a wide spectrum range photon beams with high flux and brilliance. Kocharian's press office said possibilities of the project implementation were discussed. The growing interest of different states, international organizations and academic community in the project was stated.

A special session on Synchrotron radiation research in developing countries and international scientific cooperation",  of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and sponsored by American Physical Society,organized by Herman Winick, took place in Montreal on 22 March 2004. In the session, the regional impact of Brazilian Light Source in South America, SESAME in the Middle East, SIAM in South-East were presented together with the CANDLE project, which was described in an aptly titled talk, Rejuvenating science in Armenia and its neighbors " . Several US officials and experts attended the session including Ray Orbach, Director of the Office of Science at the DOE.

  European Parliament voted for a special amendment related to the CANDLE light source. European Parliament resolution with a recommendation to the Council on EU policy towards the South Caucasus states:
"An involvement of the Union in the Armenian CANDLE synchrotron project would be a sign of encouragement to this project which concerned chiefly the European scientific teams."
